Living in Southwest Florida, we all know the "dog days of summer" last a lot longer than in other parts of the country.  Having longer periods of heat and intense sun not only take their toll on our roofs, but also has an adverse effect on our electric bills.  Kelly Roofing installs Duro-Last roofing systems because this highly reflective system does more than just protect your home or business from leaks, its also keeps your building cool.  In this section of the web-site, we will take a look at how the heat affects your energy costs as well as your comfort and safety and how Duro-Last and Kelly Roofing can help curb your rising energy costs.

Heat Island Effect
The urban heat island effect is very prevalent in Southwest Florida. The heat island effect is the tendency of populated areas to reach temperatures of three to eight degrees higher than rural areas.  Over 50% of people in the U.S. live in these areas.  Aside from the rise in temperatures, the heat island effect overheats buildings causing an increase in energy costs and speeds up the aging of homes and buildings.  There are three main reasons temperatures in urban areas are higher than rural areas; dark roofing, less vegetation and dark paving.
In the infrared images above, you can clearly see the differences in surface temperatures of the buildings.  The black roof has a surface temperature between 134 to 140 degrees, and the white Duro-Last roof has a temperature of less than 87 degrees.
