Is Your Tile Roof Leaking?
A sure sign you need tile roof repair is that your roof is leaking. If you’re not sure your roof may be leaking, check for any of these following signs:
- Stains on Sheetrock
- Stains on Ceilings
- Buckled or Peeling Wallpaper
There are many reasons for a leaking roof. Several reasons are cracked or slipped tiles, the felt underlayment has become brittle and cracked, or your roofing tile may have been improperly installed.
Cracked and Slipped Roofing Tiles
Although tiles last a long time, they can become damaged allowing your roof to leak. Foot traffic, tree branches, or other objects that have fallen or been thrown onto your roof can crack your roofing tile. Roofing tiles can also crack due to the following causes:
- Tiles weren’t cured properly before installation.
- Tiles are bound to the roof with mortar or spray foam that is stronger than the tiles causing them to crack during expansion and contraction.
- Corners become chipped during installation if nails and screws put too much pressure on the tile corners.
- Roofing tiles slip when asphalt adhesive heats up due to our hot summers. Fort Myers roofing companies must be aware of this to install the roof properly.
- Wind damage.
Old Underlayment
Roofing tiles are expected to last many years, but asphalt-based felt underlayment underneath the tiles isn’t. Expansion and contraction causes it to become brittle and crack as it ages. Once it cracks, water can seep through your roof.

If your roofing tile wasn’t installed properly to begin with, it leaves a lot of room for leaks inside your home. Improper installation includes:
- No eve riser installed
- Lead flashings installed
- No underlayment installed
- All tiles not fastened
- Tiles not fastened properly
- No ridge anchor installed
- Tile cemented in place – not fastened
- Fasteners in the roof valley
