Tesla Solar Roof & Your Electric Bill: What You Need To Know

The Tesla Powerwall

There are many different electric solar roof systems out there, but Tesla Solar Roofs are a step above the competition — in part because of something called the Tesla Powerwall.

When installed in conjunction with a solar roof system, the Powerwall acts as a battery. It stores any extra electricity generated during the day when the sun is shining. Most Tesla Solar Roofs do generate more electricity than is used during the day, especially if most or all family members are away at work or school all day. That electricity just builds up in the Tesla Powerwall over time.

At night or on a cloudy day when the solar arrays are creating less to no electricity, your home draws stored electricity from the Tesla Powerwall. There’s no need for a connection to the power grid, which means you won’t have an electricity bill.

Living Off the Power Grid

There are a few advantages of disconnecting from the public electricity supply and having a Tesla Solar Roof and Powerwall installed. For one, you don’t have to worry about power outages during a storm. The neighbors’ power might go out, but yours won’t; you still have electricity flowing from the Powerwall.

It’s also really nice not to have to pay an electric bill! Over time, the money you save on electricity will help cover the cost of having the Tesla Solar Roof and Powerwall installed. You don’t have to remember to pay the bill, either, which is nice considering how busy life can get.

When you make plans to have a Tesla Solar Roof and Powerwall installed, your installer will consider these things:

  • Size of the roof
  • Orientation of the building
  • Azimuth to the sun
  • How much energy you need to store

These, and other factors, determine how many Powerwalls you need to become independent from the power grid. If you don’t want an electric bill, you won’t have one!
